Shelter Stone provides the Medical and Response Team to the 13 Valleys Ultra

The newly formed Shelter Stone provided a 19-person strong professional event medical and rescue team to the 13 Valleys Ultra held in September 2024.

Pictured here are four members of the Shelter Stone Response Team, all of whom are experienced and current Mountain Rescue Team members from across the UK. They can provide an all-weather, all-terrain emergency response capability for the event.

The 13 Valleys Ultra is a complicated logistical challenge, with a continuous race for over 48 hours across 11 aid stations, shorter 7, 5, and 2 valley options with varying starting points and a subset of aid stations, and over 1,300 participants taking part. We worked closely with the event organizers to agree on the requirements and optimal cover, comprising start/finish line doctor-led medical care, first aid provision at all aid stations, and response teams to respond to incidents on the hill. The team was kept busy all weekend, with medics drawing on their extensive experience to treat a wide variety of presentations, and the response teams pressed into action, extracting retiring runners and responding to requests for assistance. We also provided various infrastructure requirements for the event, including a large marquee, smaller gazebos, crowd control barriers, Heras fencing, tables, chairs, and a media wall.

13 Valleys Ultra was highly successful for the event organizers, supported by the professional medical and response team services from the Shelter Stone team.

We look forward to working with the 13 Valleys Ultra again in the future and are also talking to several other event organizers about how we can meet their needs in 2025.
